Make safe first, permanent fix after
If your window is broken but the frame is sound, the glass comes out and is replaced. If the frame itself is cracked, distorted, soft or knocked out of square, the whole window is taken out and a new one fitted. Boarding is temporary and the permanent repair follows. If the opening cannot be left exposed tonight, we close it with temporary boarding while the replacement is sourced and arranged.
What happens when you call
1. Describe the damage. Tell us the window’s room, floor level and what you see: cracks in the frame, distorted profile, glass damage, or something else.
2. Give the postcode. We work out arrival time and type of job from where you are. 3. Get the quote. We quote on the call, clear and free, before any work starts. The price covers the window, labour and boarding if it is needed.
4. We attend and make safe. If boarding is needed, it goes up first. Then the window comes out and the new one goes in.
When the frame stops working
Most broken windows need reglazing: the glass comes out, the frame stays, a new pane or sealed unit goes back in. The frame decides whether it gets replaced too.
Frame work happens when:
- The profile is cracked or distorted. A crack running down the uPVC or a dent that takes the shape out of square usually means replacement.
- The rebate is soft or spongy. Rotted timber in a wooden frame will not hold glass reliably once new.
- The corner welds are sprung. uPVC frames welded at the corners lose integrity if the weld breaks.
- The system is obsolete. Very old frames do not accept modern beads, gaskets or hardware, and a like-for-like match may not exist.
- Drainage has failed. Blocked slots and water tracking into the frame can rot the interior faster than you see from outside.
- An impact damaged more than the pane. The knock that broke the glass often bent the cill or opened a joint. Once examined, the frame decides the route.
Replacement glass or a sealed unit
A sealed double-glazed unit is the whole assembly: two or more panes bonded to a perimeter spacer and insulated cavity. It is replaced as one item, not pane by pane.
If the outer pane of your double-glazed window has broken, the unit has gone, even if the inner pane still looks intact. A new unit is matched on thickness, cavity width, any tint or coating, and the beads and gaskets that hold it. This is different from single glazing, where one pane can be swapped.
If the glass is intact but the window fogs up between the panes, the perimeter seal has failed. That is misted double glazing, a separate repair.
How replacement runs
Once you call, we work through this:
- Access and safety. We check the floor level, stairs, working space outside and any public path below.
- Glass specification. Sight sizes are measured at more than one point. The glass type, thickness, any coating, and safety-glazing requirements are noted.
- Frame assessment. The cill, joints, beads, gaskets and corner welds are examined. This is when the decision firms up: reglazing, a sealed unit, or a window replacement.
- Boarding if needed. If the opening cannot stay open, we close it while the replacement is sourced.
- The new window. Once it arrives, the frame comes out, the new one is set, and the opening is sealed and glazed.
